چکیده

This proposal aims to continue the preliminary experiments using SPPS, which demonstrated the feasibility of preforming XANES experiments on the femtosecond time scale. It also has the potential to provide a shot-by-shot measurement of the beam spectral profile. The instrument consists of a simple dispersive spectrometer coupled to an integrating position-sensitive detector. Experiments at NSLS and SPPS verified the operation of the spectrometer using imaging plates and a commercial CCD detector respectively. With the low intensities available from SPPS, several hundred pulses needed to be accumulated for a useable spectrum. With LCLS, a single shot should be sufficient. At 100Hz operation, 1 second should give excellent spectra, even for rather dilute systems, and would allow subtle spectral modifications to be recorded. To fully realize the instrument's potential, several enhancements need to be made, described below.

First Lasing of the Lcls X-ray Fel at 1.5 Å

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) is a SASE 1.5-15 Å x-ray Free-Electron Laser (FEL) facility under construction at SLAC [1], and presently in an advanced phase of commissioning. The injector, linac, and new bunch compressors were commissioned in 2007 [2] and 2008 [3], establishing the necessary electron beam brightness at 14 GeV. The final phase of commissioning, including the FEL undulat...

Laser power meters as an X-ray power diagnostic for LCLS-II

For the LCLS-II X-ray instruments, laser power meters are being developed as compact X-ray power diagnostics to operate at soft and tender X-ray photon energies. These diagnostics can be installed at various locations along an X-ray free-electron laser (FEL) beamline in order to monitor the transmission of X-ray optics along the beam path. In addition, the power meters will be used to determine...

Coherent Synchrotron Radiation as a Diagnostic Tool for the LCLS

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) will be the world’s first x-ray free-electron laser (FEL). To ensure the vitality of FEL lasing, a longitudinal feedback system is required together with other diagnostics. In this paper, we study the possibility of using Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) from the chicane as a diagnostic tool for bunch length feedback. Studies show that CSR is a good ca...

Status of the LCLS X-Ray FEL Program

The Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) program involves a collaboration of several US National Laboratories and universities with the goal of designing and building the first 4-generation hard x-ray source, an x-ray free-electron laser (FEL). This FEL will utilize extremely short, intense, low-emittance electron pulses created by the high-energy linear accelerator at the Stanford Linear Acceler...

Review of Diagnostics for next Generation Linear Accelerators

New electron linac designs incorporate substantial advances in critical beam parameters such as beam loading and bunch length and will require new levels of performance in stability and phase space control. In the coming decade, e(and e+) linacs will be built for a high power linear collider (TESLA, CLIC, JLC/NLC), for fourth generation X-ray sources (TESLA FEL, LCLS, Spring 8 FEL) and for basi...
